WOKSHOP 5x5. 2010 MOZAMBIQUE, Chokwe. Floods

PROBLEM:

Each decade Mozambique suffers several large floods from its big rivers, Limpopo is one of them.

2000: Limpopo floods affected 200.000 inhabitants.

Chokwe has 73.000 inhabitants. 60.000 of them were affected.

GOVERNMENT STRATEGY

Mozambique Government tries to relocate or eradicate this people on highland far away of the river. The problem is local economy depends of LimpopoBasin and its rich soil to cultivate.

SOLUTION STRATEGY:

1.- Discover higher and safer places inside of LimpopoBasin.

These places must have coincidence with public spaces; squares, markets, schools.

2.- Create roads (land) and canals (water) towards these safer places.

People could move by boats.

3.- Create Survival Platforms on these safe places to receive people during floods.

These platforms will use like schools, markets or public equipments.
